Calligraphy is the art of making writing look beautiful — and it is also the writing you get when someone does that well. People use special pens, brushes, or a piece of reed, and they care about every stroke, the space between letters, the way the whole page sits. Though actually, English calligraphy is broader than Taiwan’s everyday 書法. Here, 書法 usually means Chinese (or Japanese, Korean) brush writing, with its own history and rules. The English word also names Arabic scripts, Western and , and careful hand-lettering on a café slate. A student who only pictures a brush and 王羲之 is not wrong, but they are seeing one famous family of the art, not the whole English word. You can say “a piece of calligraphy” for the finished work. It is a slightly formal, word; handwriting is simply how you write, beautiful or not.
