A typeface is a designed set of letters, numbers and marks that all share one look — the shapes you are reading right now. Times New Roman, Helvetica, Arial and Garamond are typefaces. Designers create them, and each one has a personality: some look formal, some friendly, some plain. Most people today say 'font' for this, and in everyday speech and in software menus that is completely normal. But there is a real difference worth knowing, and designers care about it. The typeface is the design — the family of shapes. A font is one particular version of it, at one weight and one size: Helvetica Bold 12pt is a font; Helvetica is the typeface. The word comes from printing, when each letter was a small metal block and the 'face' was the raised part that touched the paper. The word is written as one word, and it is countable: one typeface, two typefaces.
組成type + face. 'Type' here is the old printing sense: the metal blocks that carried letters. 'Face' is the surface of the block that was inked and pressed onto the page — so a typeface is literally the face the type shows.
