Picture a racing track bent into an oval. Every lane goes round the same bend, but the lane closest to the middle covers less ground. Whoever is there has not gone faster than anyone else. There is simply less track in front of them. English keeps both halves of that picture: the short lane you can actually point at, and the feeling of being the one whose way round is shorter.
