Think of walking through layers: an outer hall, then an inner one, then a narrow door, and finally a room with nothing beyond it. That last room is the innermost one. The word is really the top of a scale — inner, further in, no further. A person can be pictured the same way, with layers of what you show, what you tell close friends, and one room at the centre that almost nobody enters.

From Old English innemest, reshaped later under the influence of inner; by surface analysis simply inner plus -most. The word has always been a superlative of inside, which is why one picture covers both a cave and a person.
來自古英語 innemest，後來受到 inner 的影響改寫成今天的樣子。拆開看就是 inner 加上 -most。也就是說，它從頭到尾都是「裡面」的最高級。這正好解釋了為什麼同一幅畫面既能講山洞，也能講人心。
