Facing or moving toward the outside, away from the center — 'outward-facing seats' point away from the middle, and an 'outward journey' is the trip away from home (before you come back, which would be the 'return journey'). 'Outward' can also describe how something appears on the surface, versus what's really going on inside — 'her outward calm hid how nervous she really felt,' meaning the calm was just what showed, not necessarily what she truly felt.
