Nationhood is the state of being a nation: a people with their own country, their own government, and the sense that they belong together as one. Writers use it when a place becomes independent, or when they ask whether a group has that standing yet — “achieving nationhood,” “a young nation still finding its nationhood.” It is an abstract, slightly formal word, at home in history, politics, and speeches, not in a chat about dinner. It names the condition of a country, not a single person’s membership in one. A person has a nationality, or citizenship; a country has, or claims, nationhood. Though actually people argue, sometimes bitterly, about what counts: a flag, a language, a seat at the UN, a shared story. The word itself does not settle that fight; it only names the status being fought over.
