Self-rule is when a country, or a part of a country, is governed by its own citizens rather than by an outside power. History books and the news use it for colonies, islands, and regions that want to run their own affairs. It sits close to self-government and autonomy. Though actually, in everyday talk people more often say independence or autonomy; self-rule sounds a little more like a textbook or a headline. It is not about a person ruling their own feelings — that is self-control. This word is political: people, land, and who gets to make the laws.
