Self-rule is when a country, or a part of a country, is governed by its own citizens rather than by an outside power. History books and the news use it for colonies, islands, and regions that want to run their own affairs. It sits close to self-government and autonomy. Though actually, in everyday talk people more often say independence or autonomy; self-rule sounds a little more like a textbook or a headline. It is not about a person ruling their own feelings — that is self-control. This word is political: people, land, and who gets to make the laws.
self-rule 指一個國家，或某個地區，由自己的人民來治理，而不是受外部勢力管轄。歷史書和新聞常用它來講殖民地、島嶼，或想自己管自己事務的地區。它跟自治、自主的意思很接近。日常口語裡，人們通常說獨立或自主；self-rule 聽起來比較像教科書或新聞標題。
這個字談的是政治，講的是人民、土地，以及由誰來制定法律。它不是指一個人管自己的情緒，那屬於自我控制的範圍。
