Self-reliance is being able to do things and decide things yourself, without leaning on other people's help or advice. It is the noun for that independent way of living. Parents, schools, and politicians praise it: cook for yourself, fix the chair, make up your own mind. In American English it is almost a moral word — there is a famous essay with this title — and it can sound as if needing nobody were the highest good. Though actually, healthy self-reliance is not the same as refusing every hand. A person can still ask for help; they are not helpless when the help is late. Do not mix it up with selfish. Selfish is grabbing for yourself. Self-reliance is standing on your own feet.
