Indecision is the state of not being able to choose. It is not one second of doubt. It is the stretch of time when you keep going back and forth — this school or that one, stay or go — and nothing wins. People blame indecision when a plan stalls. Though actually, speakers use it in two slightly different ways: as a character word (“Her indecision drives me mad”) and as a one-off state (“a moment of indecision”). The second is fairer to most of us: even decisive people freeze sometimes. It is a little more formal than “I can’t decide,” but ordinary enough for essays and news. It names the stuck-ness, not the final choice.
