To idealize someone or something is to imagine them, or show them, as perfect — or better than they really are. You keep the good parts and quietly drop the rest. People idealize a teacher, a first love, a country, “the old days.” Later the real person or place can feel like a let-down, because you were never looking at the whole thing. Writers and painters also idealize on purpose: they show a face or a place a little better than life, so the idea comes through. The word is a little more formal than “make them sound perfect,” but you will meet it in reading. Though actually, having ideals is not the same job. Ideals are the values you aim for; to idealize is to paint a person as if they already match the perfect picture. French has idéaliser, the same idea in another coat.
