Idealization is the act of imagining or showing a person, a place, or a time as more perfect than they really are — or the polished picture you end up with. A child may keep an idealization of a grandparent: only the stories and the sweets, not the sharp words. People also talk about the idealization of “the old days,” when the past is made kinder and simpler than it was. In art the word can be quieter, not a complaint: you leave out the messy bits so the idea shows clearly. In everyday talk, though, it usually means you have gone too far toward the pretty picture. The word feels a little formal; at the table someone is more likely to say “you’re making them sound perfect.”
