    A people who rode west out of central Asia and attacked and took much of central and eastern Europe in the fourth and fifth centuries. Their best-known leader was Attila, and old European writing paints them as cruel fighters who loved war.

    This use is almost always plural and almost always has the: the Huns. It names the whole people, not one person. Two things ride along with the name. One is history: they moved west, they fought, and they frightened the Roman world. The other is a picture the losers painted, of wild riders who destroyed whatever they touched. That second thing is where the word's later, nastier uses come from, so it is worth knowing that it is a reputation and not a description.

    One person belonging to the Huns — the people who came west from central Asia and fought their way across Europe in the fourth and fifth centuries.

    口語An insulting name for German people, and especially for German soldiers, used most of all in Britain during the First World War. It is a slur, and today it is dated.

    It is usually the Hun, singular in form but standing for the whole enemy side. The insult works by pointing at the old people's reputation for cruelty and pinning it on a whole nation. You meet it now in wartime posters, old newspapers, war novels and films, which is the reason to know it. It is not a word to use of anyone; recognising it in a 1916 headline is a different act from saying it.
