Horticulture is the work or science of growing flowers, fruit, and vegetables. Think of gardens, greenhouses, fruit trees, and vegetable plots, not wide fields of rice or wheat. That wider farm work is agriculture. People use horticulture in schools, science, and the plant business; at home most people just say gardening. English took the word in the 1600s from Latin hortus, a garden, plus culture, on the same pattern as agriculture. It can mean what growers do, and also the study of that growing.
