From Middle English, partly from Middle French and partly from Latin agricultūra, from ager 'field' + cultūra 'cultivation'.

Picture farming seen as a whole system rather than as one farm: fields planted and harvested, animals raised, water and soil managed, food moving out to the cities — and the study and planning that sits behind all of it. Agriculture can be thought of as farming with its name written on a map or a government report: the same work, but looked at from above.
