Picture someone in a dark room saying: wait till you hear this. What follows makes the back of your neck cold — the empty house, the upstairs, the thing nobody can explain. That telling is the core of horror story: a piece of the world handed to you in words, shaped so that it makes you . Once the shape exists, people start using the name for real events too. If something that actually happened was bad enough to give you that same cold feeling, it gets called a horror story, and the ghosts are simply left behind.
