One way to hold `ho-hum` is as a noise before it is a word: the small two-part sigh of someone who has seen this already. Ho… hum. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is new either. Everything the word does grows out of that sound — first as the sigh itself, then as a label for whatever pulled it out of you.
