One way to hold hijacking: something is already moving, under someone else's control, and a stranger takes the wheel. A plane is in the air with its crew flying it. A is on the road with its load inside. Both are going somewhere, and both have someone in charge. Hijacking names the moment that control changes hands without agreement, and the -ing ending turns that moment into a thing you can count, report and make laws about. Once you can see the picture without the vehicle, the rest of the word opens up: a meeting, a campaign, a signal or an account can all be moving along under someone's hand, and can all be taken over the same way.
