Kidnapping is the crime of taking a person away by force, or by a trick, and keeping them when they do not want to stay. The old picture is a child stolen for money, and that is still what many people hear first — the kid in the word is old slang for a child. Though actually, the law uses kidnapping for adults too: a rich person pulled from a car, a reporter held in another country, a parent who takes a child over a border when a court said they must not. Age is not the point. The person did not agree to go, and someone is holding them. Often the ask for a large sum of money to give them back. News, police, and films all use the word. Friends may joke with it over a , but that is play; the real word is heavy.
組成kidnap + -ing. Kidnap is kid (old slang for a child) + nap (an old word for snatch, the same idea as nab). It began as thieves' slang for stealing children; the -ing makes the name of the act.
