Piracy originally means attacking and robbing ships at sea - what pirates do. Today the word is used just as often, maybe more, for illegally copying and sharing movies, music, games, or software without paying for them or having permission - 'online piracy' or just 'piracy' for short.

From Medieval Latin pīrātia, from Latin pīrāta; the 'unauthorized copying' sense arose in England 1660–1710.
