Stand at the side of a stone wall, not in front of it. Some shapes barely lift off the surface; others push forward so far that you could almost slide a finger behind a leg. The second kind is high relief. Because the shape leaves the flat background, light catches it and a deep shadow falls behind it — you cannot look at the wall and miss it.
