A Jew is a person who belongs to the Jewish people. That can mean they follow Judaism, the Jewish religion — but though actually it often does not. Many people are Jews by family and history even if they never go to , and some people who convert to Judaism become Jews by religion without being born into the group. English uses it as a noun: “She is a Jew.” Some Jewish people say that happily of themselves; others prefer “Jewish person,” because for a long time outsiders used Jew as a cold label or an insult. The word itself is not an insult when it is said with respect, but the way it is said matters a great deal. Always capital J. It names a people, not a look or a joke.
組成From Middle English Jew, Giu, Giw, Ju, from Old French juiu, Giu, gyu, from Latin iūdaeus (“Judean, Jew”), from Ancient Greek Ἰουδαῖος (Ioudaîos), from Ἰούδας (Ioúdas, “Judah”) + -ιος, from Biblical Hebrew יְהוּדָה (y'hudá, Yehuda / Judah). Doublet of Yid. It displaced Old English Iūdēisċ.
