The word is built the plain way: hate, plus -er for the one who does it. So the first picture is simply a person with something they cannot stand, and the thing is normally named right beside them — a man hater, a hater of waste. Then the internet kept the shape and dropped the object. Nobody says what is hated any more; it is understood to be you. And once the object disappeared, the word had room to carry a judgement instead: that the dislike is not earned, and is probably envy.

From Middle English hatere, that is hate plus -er, the ending for the person who does something. Old English had hetend for an enemy, literally a hater, and the same build shows up in German Hasser and Danish hader.
