A harpist is a person who plays the harp — the large triangular instrument with strings that you pluck with your fingers. That is the whole meaning; the word names the player, not the instrument. It is the ordinary, neutral word, used the same way whether the person is a professional in an orchestra, a student, or someone who plays at weddings. Two things worth knowing. First, in Irish and Scottish traditional music you will also meet 'harper', an older word that many players of the small Celtic harp prefer for themselves; 'harpist' can feel like the classical-orchestra word to them. Second, English is not tidy about which ending it uses for musicians: pianist, violinist, guitarist and harpist take -ist, but drummer and singer take -er, and there is no rule you can trust — you learn each one. If someone plays the harmonica and calls it a 'harp', they are a 'harmonica player' or 'harp player', not a harpist.
