    A harp is a big instrument shaped roughly like a triangle standing on the floor, with many strings running from top to bottom. The player sits behind it, leans it against one shoulder, and plucks the strings with the fingers of both hands — no bow, no stick, no keys. The strings are often coloured so the player can find their place, and on a full concert harp there are seven pedals at the foot that change the notes. It is old and it is everywhere: the Irish harp is a national symbol and appears on Irish coins, and in Western art and religion angels are drawn holding harps, which is why 'harp' turns up in jokes about heaven. Harp is also a verb, and here it turns : to 'harp on' something means to keep talking about it again and again until people are tired of hearing it. 'She keeps harping on about my grades.' That use is always a complaint — you would never say it about yourself with pride. Two more small uses: a player may call the instrument a 'harp', and 'harp seal' is an animal, named for a harp-shaped mark on its back.
