A vehicle standing in the street that anyone may pay to ride in. First it was a horse and a carriage waiting for a fare; later the horse became an engine. The picture that never changed is the vehicle for public hire — you stop it, you pay, it takes you. That is why the old name is still printed on modern taxi licences.
