A gunsmith is a person whose work is to make guns, repair them, and sometimes change them so they fit one customer. It is a craft, like other old metal . You would not call the person behind the counter in a gun shop a gunsmith unless they actually build or the weapons — though actually some shops do have a gunsmith in the back, and then the word is fair. It is a serious, skilled-job word, not a cowboy word and not a crime word. A gunman uses a gun; a gunsmith works on one.
