    A greatcoat is a long, heavy coat, usually wool, that comes down to the knees or even lower. It is made to keep out cold and rain, not to look light. You see it on soldiers in old photographs, on people in hard European winters, and in stories set a hundred years ago. “Great” here does not mean “wonderful”. It means large. British English uses this word more than American English; in the US people more often say . It feels a little old-fashioned now. A is for rain and is often thinner; a greatcoat is about weight and warmth.
