An overcoat is a long, thick coat you wear over your other clothes when it is cold. It usually goes down toward the knee or lower, and it is for going outside, not for sitting in class. In British English especially, overcoat still sounds like a proper winter coat, a bit more formal than a hoodie or a short jacket. Though actually, many people now just say coat for the same thing; overcoat makes you picture something older, heavier, and smarter — the kind you wear over a suit. There is a rare verb to overcoat (to put a layer of paint or material on top), but the word you will meet is the clothing noun.
