The place right beside a grave, especially while someone is being buried there. People stand at the graveside for the last words, the lowering of the coffin, the flowers. A graveside service is a short funeral held there, not in a church. You can also go back later and stand graveside with no crowd at all — it still means ‘beside that grave’. It is a quiet, serious word; you would not use it for standing next to just any hole in the ground. Though actually, writers sometimes stretch it a little: graveside manner, a graveside promise — still tied to that spot and that goodbye.
