A graveyard is a piece of ground, often next to a church, where dead people are buried. It is very close in meaning to 'cemetery', though a cemetery is usually a larger, separate piece of land just for burials, while a graveyard is smaller and often attached to a church. You will also often meet the phrase 'graveyard shift' — a work shift that happens in the middle of the night, when almost no one else is awake.
