The root is 'to draw / write / scratch a line'. Picture something drawn out fully, line by line, so clearly you can see every detail — that is the heart of graphic.

From the word’s history

From Greek graphikos 'of drawing or writing', from graphein 'to scratch, draw, write' (PIE root *gerbh- 'to scratch, carve'). This drawing/depicting root feeds both the 'graphic design' sense and the 'so vividly depicted' sense (the vivid sense in English from the 1660s, the drawing sense from 1756).
