A goddaughter is a girl : a girl whose baptism you stood at, promising to help her and to teach her the Christian faith. If you are her or godfather, she is your goddaughter. The boy word is godson; covers both. The tie is not blood and it is not adoption. You did not give birth to her, and you do not usually become her legal parent. You took a church promise. In some families the goddaughter comes for Sunday lunch and you are a real extra grown-up in her life. In others you see her mainly at Christmas and at the photos. The word is ordinary and respectful, used in Christian families and in writing about baptism. It is not a cute name for a niece, a student, or a girl you are fond of. Those are different relationships, even if the feeling is warm.
教女
組成god- + daughter. From Old English goddohtor, the same idea as godchild, but only a girl.
