A godmother is a woman who, at a baptism, promises to help a child and to walk with that child in Christian faith. She is not the mother. She is extra family of a spiritual kind. In many families she sends gifts, remembers birthdays, and stays close for years. Though actually, a lot of people now choose a godmother more as a special aunt-friend, and the church promise is lighter than it once was. In stories you also meet a fairy godmother — a magic , like in — which is a different picture, built on the same word.

組成god- + mother. The god- here is the old church prefix for the special family you join at baptism, not “a mother who is a god.” Same pattern as godfather and godson. From Old English godmōdor.
