You can think of it as a shine thrown over something — a spell that makes a life, a place, or a job look more from the outside than it feels from the inside. The shine is real to whoever sees it, but it sits on the surface.
Glamour is a Scots alteration of grammar: in an age when almost no one could read, book-learning (Latin grammar) was assumed to shade into magic, so 'glamour' first meant a spell cast over the eyes that made things look other than they were. The modern 'surface shine that dazzles the onlooker' is that same enchantment, secularised.
