Allure is the pull a person, place, or thing can have when it feels mysterious, , or hard to look away from. It is the quality itself, not a trick by another name. A quiet island can have allure. So can a dangerous idea. The word is a little formal — more at home in writing and careful speech than in the playground — but adults use it freely. As a verb, to allure someone is to draw them in with that same pull: close to attract or , though with more glamour than a plain “come here.” People sometimes stretch it: “the allure of cheap clothes” may only mean “why they look so ,” even when there is nothing mysterious about a sale.
組成al- (from Latin ad, “to, towards”) + lure (from Old French leurre, a lure). From Middle English aluren, from Old French aleurer / alurer.
