A gigabyte (GB) is a unit for how much a computer can hold — photos, songs, apps, files. In the tidy computer-science story, one gigabyte is 1,024 , because computers like powers of two. In everyday talk, and on the box of a phone or a hard drive, people often treat a gigabyte as about a billion , which is a little smaller. That is why a “256 GB” phone does not feel quite as as the , and why a “1 TB” drive may show up as about 931 GB on your computer: the seller counted in thousands, the machine counted in 1,024s. You do not need the exact number in daily life; you need the feeling. A few gigabytes is a film or a lot of photos; a phone with 64 GB fills up fast. Everyone says GB. Mix it up carefully with gigabit (small b, often Gb): that one is usually about speed, not about how much you can store.
