A byte is a small unit we use to measure information on a computer. One byte is eight bits, and a bit is the tiniest yes-or-no piece a computer can store. Files, photos, and memory are counted in bytes, then in bigger steps: , , . You say it just like bite. People use it loosely too — “How many bytes is that?” can just mean “How big is the file?” It is a technical word, but almost everyone who uses a phone has heard it. Though actually, when people say “a thousand bytes,” computer people have sometimes meant 1024, not 1000; everyday talk often ignores that fuss.

組成An alteration of the word bite, spelled this way so it would not be accidentally written as bit. Coined by Werner Buchholz in 1956, during the early design of IBM’s 7030 Stretch computer.
