Gen. is the written short form of General when General is a rank, set in front of a person’s name: Gen. Smith. You see it in newspapers, photo captions, and formal lists. Out loud you say the full word General; you do not read the three letters. English also has general as an ordinary adjective (a general idea, in general), but that general is not written Gen. The Bible book Genesis is to Gen. in some verse references — that is a different Gen. This entry is the rank.
