From Old Northern French galun, from Late Latin galum, galus 'measure of wine'.

Think of the big plastic milk you carry home from the shop in one hand — eight pints, heavy enough that you feel it. That is a gallon: a fixed measure of liquid, but a large one. The size is what makes the word useful twice over.

gallon 可以想成超市裡那種一大壺牛奶：八品脫，單手提起來會有點沉的份量。它是個確定的單位（英國一加侖約 4.55 公升，美國約 3.79 公升，同一個字兩種大小），但一種想法是，這個字給人的感覺重點不在刻度精不精準，而在「一大壺、拿得動但很有份量」——正是這個「大壺」的感覺，讓它後來也能拿來講「多到誇張」。
