Something fulfilling makes you feel that deep, useful kind of happy — you are doing interesting, useful, or important things, not just staying busy or getting paid. A fulfilling job is work that feels worth doing. A fulfilling day is a day in which you did something that mattered to you. This word describes the thing: the job, the hobby, the life. The person who has it feels fulfilled. Though actually, the same -ing form can simply be the verb in progress: she is fulfilling her promise, meaning she is doing what she said she would. That is the “complete the task” family, not the “happy with your life” family. In the life sense, fulfilling is a warm, slightly serious word, stronger than nice or interesting, and common when people talk about work and what they want from life.
