核心畫面

A row of little lanterns hanging upside down on a garden bush, curling back, in a pink so bright it almost hums. Everything else the word does can be thought of as coming from that flower: first the plant has the name, then the colour borrows it, then the colour word goes straight in front of a noun.

From the word’s history

The plant was named after Leonhart Fuchs, a German botanist of the sixteenth century, through the New Latin genus name Fuchsia. That is why the spelling has the odd chs in it.

這株植物是以十六世紀德國植物學家 Leonhart Fuchs(1501–1566)命名的,經由拉丁屬名 Fuchsia 進入英文。所以那個很難拼的 chs 其實是一個人的姓留下來的痕跡——記 Fuchs + ia,就不會寫成 fuschia。
