Magenta is a dark reddish-purple colour — strong pink-purple, not quite red and not quite purple. Printers use it as one of their main inks, so you will see the name on a printer when that colour runs out. Clothes, flowers, and makeup use it too. The colour-word is quite new. In 1859 a French chemist made a bright dye, and people named the colour after a battle that same year at the town of Magenta in northern Italy. Though actually, the town’s own name is much older: it comes from a Latin camp named after the emperor Maxentius. So the place-name is ancient, but the colour-name is only about a hundred and sixty years old.
組成Borrowed from French magenta, from the Italian town Magenta. The colour was named in 1859 after the Battle of Magenta; a new aniline dye that year, made by François-Emmanuel Verguin, took the same name. The town name comes from Latin Castra Maxentia, “the camp of Maxentius”.
