A begonia is a plant people grow in pots and gardens. Its flowers may be yellow, pink, red, white, or mixed; some kinds have small flowers, so you notice the leaves first — thick, shiny, spotted, or painted with silver and red. In Taiwan you see them on balconies and in porch shade: they like light but not a hard afternoon sun, and they rot if the pot stays wet. The English name does not describe the plant. People who name plants gave the whole group a person's name. In a shop, begonia may mean a small flowering pot-plant or a fancy-leaf one; gardeners split the kinds further, but ordinary speakers usually do not.
