One way to hold this word: the edge of a piece of cloth that has been rubbed for years. It has stopped being a clean edge. Single threads have worked loose and stick out, and the whole edge looks soft and undone. Nothing has snapped — it is all still there, just no longer holding its shape. That is what frazzle originally described, and everything else in the word is that same edge put somewhere new: on a person who has been worn at for a week, or on a piece of toast left on the heat until only a dry black scrap is left.

Originally an East Anglian word, from a variant of the now obsolete fazle, to unravel, reshaped under the influence of fray. Fazle goes back through Middle English facelyn, of a rope or cloth end, to come unravelled, to Old English fæs, a fringe or border. So the loose-threaded edge is not a later image: it is the word's first meaning.
