    Fluorine is a chemical element, symbol F. In its free form it is a pale yellow gas that is poisonous and attacks almost everything it touches — one of the fiercest elements there is. You will not meet the gas in daily life. Though actually, the “fluorine” you hear about in is not this gas; it has been locked into fluoride compounds. Chemists keep the free element in special equipment. The name comes from Latin fluor, “flow,” because the mineral it was taken from melts and flows easily. A British chemist, Humphry Davy, coined the English name in 1813.
