In each sport the phrase quietly marks off the scores that are handed to you after play has stopped. Football sets it against the short kick that follows a touchdown; basketball sets it against the free throw taken after a foul; rugby sets it against a kick awarded once the game has been halted. So the word field is doing real work here: the score came from open play, not from a stopped game.
