    A farmyard is the open ground among the farm buildings — the space the barn, the sheds, and the house look onto. Chickens walk there; tractors stand there; mud lives there. It is a yard, not a field. You would not call a wide rice paddy a farmyard. In British English the word is ordinary; American English often says for something very close.
