From Middle English ferme 'rent', from Medieval Latin firma; debated whether from Old English feorm or Latin firmus.

You can picture 'farm' as a piece of land set aside to make food grow — fields of crops, and animals like cows, pigs, and chickens being raised on it. Everything else about the word grows out of this one picture: the place, the house on it, and the work of running it.
