A fangirl is a girl or young woman who loves a game, comic, show, band, or book so much that she spends a lot of time on it — talking about it, collecting it, writing about it, knowing small details. Fan here is the “big supporter” fan, plus girl. It can be warm (she says it about herself) or a little teasing (someone else saying she cares “too much”). It is informal internet-and-pop-culture English, not a school-book word. There is a matching fanboy for boys and young men; some people now just say fan to avoid the gender. Though actually, fangirl is also used as a verb: to fangirl over someone is to get excitedly, obviously keen. The entry you need first is still the person.
