One way to picture 'extension': something is stretched out longer or made bigger — and often the new added length itself. Picture a road pushed further on, or the extra piece onto the end. From that one image of 'stretched longer / the added part', the word spreads in many directions: extra time, a wider reach, an added phone on the line, extra hair, an electric cable that reaches further, even the dot-letters added to the end of a file name.
